Highlands Insider is a private, family-owned, independent community news publication dedicated to building community and strengthening local connections. Our publications, both in print and online, engage an actively involved audience who values meaningful, hyper-local journalism. We are seeking passionate individuals to contribute compelling, well-researched content that informs, inspires, and connects the residents of Putnam County, TN, and the Highlands region. All stories must be locally focused, and our editorial approach emphasizes journalistic integrity, fairness, and balanced reporting.
We are hiring for the following positions:

Reporters (Full-Time/Part-Time)

Freelance Writers

Column Specialists

Community Correspondents (for Putnam County, Jackson County, Overton County, White County, TN)
Key Responsibilities:
Reporter (Full-Time/Part-Time):
-
Research, write, and develop well-sourced, locally relevant news and feature stories.

Conduct interviews with officials, business leaders, and community members.
-
Attend local meetings, events, and press conferences to gather information.
-
Capture multimedia content, including photos and videos.
-
Assist with newsroom planning and community engagement.
-
Meet deadlines and submit work in a timely manner.
Freelance Writer:
-
Write assigned or self-pitched stories including features, business spotlights, and human-interest pieces.

Ensure content is strictly local to Putnam County and the Highlands region.
-
Follow AP Style, fact-check, and meet deadlines.
-
Work independently while collaborating with the editorial team.
Column Specialist:
-
Provide well-researched and engaging content within a specific specialty area (e.g., business, health, food, faith, sports, etc.).

Develop a unique voice and perspective.
-
Submit columns regularly (weekly, biweekly, or monthly).
-
Work closely with editors to align with publication tone.
Community Correspondent:
-
Cover local events, community meetings, and happenings in designated areas of Putnam, Jackson, Overton, and White Counties.

Submit articles, photos, and updates showcasing the unique qualities of each area.

Collaborate with the editorial team to ensure accuracy and quality.
Minimum Job Requirements:
Education:
-
High School Diploma required.
-
Journalism degree preferred but not required.
Experience:
-
Prior newsroom experience is a plus for reporters.

Freelancers, columnists, and community correspondents should demonstrate expertise in their writing niche.
Skills & Qualifications:
-
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
-
Strong research, interviewing, and storytelling abilities.

Comfortable using digital tools, cameras, and voice recorders for reporting.

Familiarity with AP Style and grammar practices.
-
Strong time management and critical thinking skills.
-
Ability to meet deadlines and work efficiently under pressure.
Working Conditions:
-
Reporters: Flexible schedule required, including some nights, weekends, and travel for assignments.

Freelance Writers, Columnists & Community Correspondents: Remote work with flexible deadlines.
-
Fieldwork: Some assignments require travel for local event coverage.
