Job Summary
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in executing specific tasks of a skilled nature, which involves some advanced training and/or experience.

Examples of work performed
Receives work orders or project assignment from supervisor; orders, assembles and prepares materials necessary to complete assignment; establishes a safe work area and coordinates activities with employees or the general public as necessary; creates and places forms to meet specifications; finishes concrete; carpentry work for form construction; masonry work for catch basin construction; performs routine preventive maintenance and cleaning on all equipment utilized in the performance of assigned tasks; operates laser for pipe laying on a specific grade; operates light equipment and performs simple tasks with heavy equipment including backhoes, dump trucks and loaders; performs related work as required.

Required Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge of practices used in the operation of light equipment and knowledge based on minimum experience in performing simple tasks with heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of state and city traffic regulations.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions and maintenance of equipment.
  • Knowledge of the materials and equipment used in general maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to operate a variety of light and heavy vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to pour and finish concrete.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and co-workers.
Qualifications
  • Must possess a valid Tennessee Driver's license.
  • Experience required in construction work involving a knowledge of concrete work (forming, finishing, etc.), pipe laying and equipment operation.
  • High school education or equivalent is preferred.
Essential Functions
  • Some heavy lifting and pushing required.
  • Responsible for pouring and finishing various types of concrete, establishing grades, setting wood and metal forms; estimates labor and material costs; determines types and quantity of materials to be used in the construction/maintenance repair of aprons, slabs, driveways, curbs, gutters, foundations, walls, etc.
  • Drives truck to haul crew, materials and equipment.
  • Subjected to extended periods of physical exertion while shoveling and d igging and forming and finishing concrete.
  • Good hand-eye coordination required in the operation of large, heavy trucks especially when operating in and around construction on rights-of-way and in tight situations.
